5 Books and Podcasts That Changed my Life

For my very first round-up of Top 5s on my blog, I want to talk about the self-improvement books and podcasts that changed my life. If you noticed on my blog archive, I haven’t blogged anything in 2017. I had a bad break-up in 2016 that made me question my self-worth. It gave me anxieties and extreme sadness. I don’t know if I should call it depression, but it made me lose interest in the things I love. It gave me a hard time waking up and living for the day, and it also made me lose touch with the people I love. I just caved in - and the pain that it caused made me put up walls for others to not get too close. It made me believe that I should not trust anyone - and made me realize that I had nobody to rely on at the end of the day except myself.

I’ve been confident with my 5-year relationship back then that I never thought that we would break-up. It shattered my dreams of having a family of my own, and it also left scars on my heart and mind. The biggest mistake I made is that I became reliant on other people for validation, that I always felt insecure as if everything I had was not enough. This took a toll on my mental and emotional state. I became unhappy and unappreciative of the blessings that came to me. I always looked at other people’s Facebook profile and compared my life with theirs — thinking of how unfortunate I was that I didn’t get to be popular, nor had the money to afford the fancy stuff they have. 2016 and 2017 were the most toxic years for me that I felt like my life was spiraling down. It’s hard to keep a smiling face up in this world when in fact, deep inside you’re a mess. Until one day, I woke up feeling the worst and suddenly thought:

“I should wake up from this nightmare and get my life together.”

The first thing I did to make myself better was to cut my hair short. It’s the first time I cut my once long hair to shoulder-length so it’s really a huge change. As the saying goes,

“A woman who cuts her hair short is about to change her life”.

The haircut made me feel confident so it’s a good start. But what made a huge impact on my self-improvement journey were the times I sought God for refuge. I always listened to Hillsong and Planetshakers, and I even became active on The Feast in our area. I incorporated reading books before going to bed to prevent me from having bad sleep due to negative thoughts. While riding cabs or jeepneys, I listen to podcasts just so I wouldn't have to think negative thoughts. I made sure to keep my thoughts busy from time to time so that anxiety won’t take over me.

Self-improvement saved me from who I was before and it became a huge part of my life. I’m excited to share with you my Top 5 podcasts and books that helped me get through the toughest times - and how they changed my life for the better.

This book taught me to appreciate the simple blessings in life. This book taught me to slow down, observe the things around me and grasp every detail of this fast-paced world. Through this book, I learned to appreciate the world, and focus on the beauty of it more than the tangible things.

Together with The Power of Positive Thinking, I always have this book on my bedside table. I read it every day for 5 minutes. The book has short chapters that includes a story/topic, and a couple of Bible verses at the end for you to reflect on relating to the topic. Five minutes is enough to finish a chapter but those 5 minutes are really worth it, and it will make you feel better inside.

I love Ted Talk. It empowered me to be a better person since the speakers in this series are professionals and influential people who also went through a lot in their lives. Some use their specialties to give us more information regarding the social issues we have today. I love how some of the speakers tell stories based on their experiences, and how they conquered their problems. There are topics which you’ll relate to and surely get something from.
